Comprehensive Evaluation Rubric for Assessing Instructional
Apps
Lee, Cheng-Yuan; Cherner, Todd Sloan
Journal of Information Technology Education: Research,
v14 p21-53 2015
There is a pressing need for an evaluation rubric
that examines all aspects of educational apps designed
for instructional purposes. In past decades, many
rubrics have been developed for evaluating educational
computer-based programs; however, rubrics designed
for evaluating the instructional implications of educational
apps are scarce. When an Internet search for existing
rubrics was conducted, only two such rubrics were
found, and the evaluation criteria used in those rubrics
was not clearly linked to previously conducted research
nor were their evaluative dimensions clearly defined.
These shortcomings result in reviewers being unable
to use those rubrics to provide teachers with a precise
analysis of an educational app's instructional potential.
In response, this paper presents a comprehensive rubric
with 24-evaluative dimensions tailored specifically
to analyze the educational potential of instructional
apps.

Performance Assessment: Exploring Three Approaches
for Quality Rubric Construction
DeLuca, Christopher; Bolden, Benjamin
Music Educators Journal, v101 n1 p70-76 Sep 2014
Assessing student performance is a central challenge
for music educators. In alignment with previous research,
this article asserts that rubrics provide a viable
and useful structure for assessing music performance.
To expand the potential of rubrics in music education,
challenges to effective rubric construction are identified
and addressed through the construction of three different
types of performance rubrics: (1) a discrete-component
rubric, (2) an integrated-component rubric, and (3)
a self-reflection rubric. Through analysis of these
rubrics, we identify ways to construct assessment
criteria that are sufficiently descriptive to accurately
measure achievement and provide helpful feedback to
learners. We demonstrate how criteria can be constructed
that both encourage achievement of curriculum expectations
and technical proficiency and leave room for students'
expressive intentions. We offer ideas for integrating
these rubrics into the music classroom.
- Crossing
the Rubric-Con
Bailey, James R.
Journal of Management Education, v38 n3 p313-318 Jun
2014
This essay engages the prospect and peril of employing
rubrics in America. It discusses how institutional
independence affects the enterprise, and addresses
whether rubrics will be received as salvation or subservience
by educational agents. It asks how rubrics can benefit
stakeholders while examining their unintended consequences.
It concludes by ringing a cautionary bell that the
price of crossing the Rubric-con may be too steep.

Rubrics to Assess Competences in ICT Subjects
Rivas, Manuela Raposo; De La Serna, Manuel Cebrian;
Martinez-Figueira, Esther
European Educational Research Journal, v13 n5 p584-594
2014
Helping students to acquire specific competences is
nowadays one of the basic pillars of university teaching;
therefore its evaluation and accreditation is of key
importance. As of late, rubrics and in particular
electronic rubrics (e-rubrics) have become an important
resource to assess competences and guide students
in their learning processes. In this contribution,
the authors present a quasi-experimental study that
was conducted to explore and evaluate the use of the
e-rubrics in subjects related to information and communication
technology (ICT). Data were collected on how students
viewed their use of e-rubrics in self-evaluation and
peer evaluation. They show that the experimental groups
using e-rubrics were better evaluated by their professors
than the control groups who did not engage in self-evaluation
using e-rubrics. The students see e-rubrics as a positive
resource because they feel e-rubrics allow for a truly
objective evaluation. Additionally, e-rubrics are
considered to be helpful in improving learning and
self-regulation.
- The
Use of Scoring Rubrics for Formative Assessment Purposes
Revisited: A Review
Panadero, Ernesto; Jonsson, Anders
Educational Research Review, v9 p129-144 Jun 2013
The mainstream research on scoring rubrics has emphasized
the summative aspect of assessment. In recent years,
the use of rubrics for formative purposes has gained
more attention. This research has, however, not been
conclusive. The aim of this study is therefore to
review the research on formative use of rubrics, in
order to investigate if, and how, rubrics have an
impact on student learning. In total, 21 studies about
rubrics were analyzed through content analysis. Sample,
subject/task, design, procedure, and findings, were
compared among the different studies in relation to
effects on student performance and selfregulation.
Findings indicate that rubrics may have the potential
to influence students learning positively, but also
that there are several different ways for the use
of rubrics to mediate improved performance and self-regulation.
There are a number of factors identified that may
moderate the effects of using rubrics formatively,
as well as factors that need further investigation.
